O'Connor Utilities, (OCU), were formed in 1994 to provide Project Management services to the telecommunications industry, and have subsequently expanded their service offering to the communications, power, water, gas, pipeline and railway markets, operating all over the UK and Ireland from offices in Manchester, North South & West London, Sheffield, Leeds, Sellafield, Newcastle, Hull, Stockton-on-Tees, Tyne & Wear, North & South Wales and Edinburgh.
OCU completed their first Horizontal Directional Drill in 2003, and now operate a twelve strong rig fleet capable of installing pipelines up to 1,400mm in diameter and up to 3.0 kilometres in length; in ground conditions from sands and clays to solid rock.

We work mainly in urban environments installing utilities and environmental wells under roads, railways, canals and industrial infrastructure, but are equally at home drilling under rivers, archaeological sites, coastlines, contaminated land and environmentally sensitive areas.
OCU operate an accredited ISO 9001 Quality Management System, an OHSAS 18001 Health & Safety Management System and an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, and were the first utility company to achieve the Lloyds Assurance accreditation for Directional Drilling. We are registered with Achilles Verify, Lloyds NERS, Link Up, RoSPA, UKSTT and the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme.
We also maintain comprehensive Professional Indemnity Insurance to support a Directional Drilling Design capability that undertakes full project evaluation including site investigation, utility mapping and topographic surveys to produce Feasibility Studies, Environmental Impact Assessments and Technical Proposals that enable our clients to go out to tender with viable HDD designs. In addition we can undertake Geotechnical Risk Assessments to produce settlement and heave calculations, and pipeline stress analysis for submission of Network Rail, Highways England, Canal & Rivers Trust and National Grid consent applications.
OCU's Water Services division provides planning services, project management, civil's excavation for mains renewal & refurbishments, sewers, pipe bursting, slip lining and close fit lining. We can also provide a wide range of services geared to the detection and prevention of leakage.
OCU's Extra High Voltage division offer planning services, project management, civil's excavation, cable supply, cable lay, cable pulling and jointing for works up to 132kV. We possess the latest technology, such as computerised cable winches that are capable of pulling cable lengths in excess of 1.5km and competitively tender for contestable works, non-contestable works and Maintenance Contracts. Our overhead line department maintains and refurbishes systems up to 33kV.
OCU's Gas Pipelines Division are a National Grid framework contractor delivering cross country pipelines, civils, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation services across the full range of diameters and pressures, in steel and HDPE.
OCU's Telecommunications Division, in conjunction with our sister company Instalcom, have been a market leader in the design, installation, testing and maintenance of fibre optic networks in the UK and Ireland for over 25 years.
